Day 3

Today is our first full day in Brazil. We spent the morning doing home visits with different families. The people here are so welcoming. The town we were in is conserved lower class- actually the state we are in is one of the poorest in the country and the poorest among the 9 states in the Northeast. Ive enjoyed the food so far which is surprising because I am so picky.

The picture below is of the city- I will post some pictures of the town soon.

Unfortunately, we do not have Internet at the hotel like we expected so I'm not sure how often I can post this week.

Here are some questions:

1. Name 3 foods that are native to Brazil?
2. List 5 states in Brazil.
3. What is the major religion in Brazil.

  2. Day 1
    1. What is a visa? How long can someone use a Brazilian visa before it expires? A visa is an authorization on a passport permitting an individual to travel from their native country to/ through another specific country. Brazilian tourist visas must be renewed after ninety days spent in country (not necessarily consecutively).
    2. What is the capital of Brazil? The capital of Brazil is Brasilia. It has the largest population for any city not in existence at the start of the twentieth century.
    3. What is the total flight time for my two flights? (I.e. how long do I have to entertain myself while sitting next to a stranger?) 2:17 (PHL to ATL)+10:53(ATL to BSB)=13:10, roughly 790 total minutes
    4. How many miles is it from Pemberton, NJ to my final destination (the capital city?) hint: use google maps The straight line distance between Pemberton and Brasilia Aeroporto is approximately 4229 miles or 6806 kilometers.
    Day 2
    1. In which Brazilian state does Teresina lie? Teresina is the capital and most populous municipality in the Brazilian state of Piaui, but with only 814,439 inhabitants (about a tenth of New York City) it is the 19th largest city in Brazil. Teresina is also the hottest city in the country, ranked 3rd in cities with the most lightning in the world (I feel for you, Bobbie!). It has a record high of 106 degrees Fahrenheit in October, but a record high and average of only 91 and 88 degrees in March respectively, Teresina’s coolest day temperature time of the year.
    2. What is Brazilian currency (money) called? The present-day currency in Brazil is the “real” (R$). One BRL is worth roughly half as much as a USD.
    3. What is the current temperature in Brazil? Thursday to Sunday temperature is in high 90’s, partly cloudy with low chance of precipitation. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday cools down slightly, however humidity goes up, as there is a high chance of thunderstorms (way to hot and sticky for my liking).
    Day 3
    1. Name 3 foods that are native to Brazil? (Feijoada-the country’s national dish, a stew of beans, beef, and pork.) Açaí, cupuaçu, mango, papaya, cocoa, cashew, guava, orange, passion fruit, pineapple, and hog plum are all common indigenous produce that are juiced and used in chocolate, popsicles, and ice cream. I’m partial to the rice and beans with lots of cassava flour and fried banana/plantain, meat, and cheese combo. Drink lots of coffee, too. They mix it with cachaça, an alcoholic sugar liquor.
    2. . List 5 states in Brazil. Brazil is home to 26 states divided into 5 regions. Roraima in northernmost state in the North region. Paraiba is the easternmost state in the Northeast region. Mato Grosso is the westernmost state in the Central-West region. Rio de Janeiro is the most popular and second most economic state in Brazil (behind Sao Paulo state) and is located in the southeast region. And finally, there is the Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state in the South region of Brazil.
    3. What is the major religion in Brazil? By far the most dominant religion in Brazil is Roman Catholicism with 64.6% of the population being of that faith, followed by Protestantism with 22.2%.

  3. I'm not so sure if that last message went through.... I just wanted to tell you how jealous I am of you. I am extremely glad to have heard from you and read your blog as I did once with you Egypt one. I hope that you enjoy the sights, food, and people. I also hope that the weather gets better and it gets cooler. But from what I gather from AOL weather it will only get worse. :( Good luck in your endeavors and adventures down south. Live your trip to the fullest and enjoy as much as you can while you're there. Its not every day that you get to experience something as exotic as Brazil. (Maybe you can watch a Soccer game, if your into that) I look forward to March 8th for BCA is incomplete without you!
