Final day

Today is my final day in Brazil. Unfortunately I have not had Internet access to update this blog as much as I would like, but hopefully it has given you a better understanding of Brazil. In the past few days I have held a goat, played soccer with Brazilians ( I have the bruises to prove it), eaten a lot of different meats (I didn't eat the cow tongue though) and had a lot of different experiences. There is something so special about this place and I'm sad to leave (though I miss the people at home). I look forward to returning one day! Here is your final assignment:

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you want to go and why? Write at least 3 paragraphs. Include general information about the place (climate, money, language, etc). Be sure to also list 3 places/attractions you can visit there.

Day 5

Today we spent the morning in school. There are not many things I love more than being in a classroom. The students' ages vary more than a traditional English classroom. After giving a short presentation, the students were able to ask us questions. A lot of their questions focused on what life is like in America (whether, food, etc.) During our visit to an English class, I offered an America dollar to anyone who could ask me a question in English. After the class everyone wanted to trade Brazilian money for American dollars. Here are some questions for today:

1. At what age do children start school in Brazil?
2. Look up information about the Brazilian university system. Write a paragraph describing the system.

Day 4

This morning we are heading out to do some more home visits in a different city. The people in the last town were so welcome. It was somewhat uncomfortable because they treated us like celebrities. Through these visits I'm learning more about the general culture. Sports are certainly popular. Watching the news has been eye opening as well. I'm so surprised by the number of people here who have asked me about Hurricane Sandy when they hear I have from Jersey. Here are some questions for today:

1. What is the most popular sport in Brazil? Name two local teams for that sport.
2. Look up current events in Brazil and choose one. Write a paragraph summarizing this event.

Day 3

Today is our first full day in Brazil. We spent the morning doing home visits with different families. The people here are so welcoming. The town we were in is conserved lower class- actually the state we are in is one of the poorest in the country and the poorest among the 9 states in the Northeast. Ive enjoyed the food so far which is surprising because I am so picky.

The picture below is of the city- I will post some pictures of the town soon.

Unfortunately, we do not have Internet at the hotel like we expected so I'm not sure how often I can post this week.

Here are some questions:

1. Name 3 foods that are native to Brazil?
2. List 5 states in Brazil.
3. What is the major religion in Brazil.

Day 2

We arrived in the capital this morning. I found out we need to take another flight to the city of Teresina and from there we will travel to the town of Agua Branca. I can already feel the heat even though we are inside. It is summer here right now. I still have to exchange money and I have to admit that the language barrier is already making things somewhat difficult. I cannot wait to arrive at the hotel. Even though I slept a lot on the plane, traveling is exhausting. It's absolutely worth it though. Here are some more questions:

1. In which Brazilian state does Teresina lie?
2. What is Brazilian currency (money) called?
3. What is the current temperature in Brazil.

Day 1

Today I leave for Brazil. Currently I am waiting at Philadelphia Airport for my flight to Atlanta. I had to go through security and show my passport and visa. My flight departs at 2:15pm and arrives at 4:32pm. From Atlanta I will fly to the capital of Brazil. That flight departs at 8:32pm and arrives in Brazil at 7:25am. Good thing I have a window seat so I can sleep! Here are the questions for today:

1. What is a visa? How long can someone use a Brazilian visa before it expires?
2. What is the capital of Brazil?
3. What is the total flight time for my two flights? (I.e. how long do I have to entertain myself while sitting next to a stranger?)
4. How many miles is it from Pemberton, NJ to my final destination (the capital city?) hint: use google maps

Please feel free to leave me comments :) I will post tomorrow when I arrive at the hotel.
